A labiaplasty is a surgical procedure that will reduce and/or reshape the labia minora, otherwise known as the inner “lips” of the vulva.
It is usually requested when women have difficulty and/or discomfort when wearing underwear or tight clothing. It can also help women who suffer pain during intercourse.
However, some women also would like to have the procedure done when they feel the labia is either too large or aesthetically not pleasing.
The procedure can be done either under local or general anaesthetic and usually takes an hour to perform. The procedure is relatively simple and it involves excising an area of the labia minora using a variety of incisions.
Bruising and swelling are common but will go down after 1-2 weeks, so it is recommended to wear loose fitting clothing and cotton underwear for few weeks to avoid any unnecessary discomfort. All the other risk factors will be discussed at the time of consultation.
Recovery time varies to every person but usually takes a week to return to work. It is advisable to keep the area clean and free from infection. Also to avoid sex and use sanitary towels instead of tampons for few weeks. It is also recommended to take shower than bath until recovery.
Your VIP Cosmetic Plastic Surgeon will explain the procedure and risks after assessment. Women seeking labial reduction surgery should discuss their questions and expectations with their surgeon.
